Here are some pictures and x-rays from different sites I've visited. Warning: These images are intended for use by medical personnel only. Several images may be disturbing to some viewers.  These are real and may "gross out" someone with a weak stomach. I posted these only as an example of what you may see if you work in an emergency department. One aspect of emergency medicine that I like is its unpredictable nature. You never know what is going to show up. However, you can usually predict when. The more difficult the case the more likely it will arrive during the most inappropriate time.  Please do not go any further if you are unprepared for what you may see.

Foreign body in the esophagus: A 34-year-old resident of a state mental institution presented with a history of reportedly having swallowed a safety pin during a scuffle with a caregiver. The anterior-posterior radiographic view of the neck reveals an open safety pin just below the level of the cricopharyngeous muscle.

19 year old male in MVC with a diaphragmatic rupture resulting in abdominal contents forced into the chest cavity. Notice the stomach bubble at the level of the heart on the left side.

Foreign body in the foot: A 9-year-old child stepped on a sewing needle that became imbedded within the tarsal cuboid. The needle was removed with a pair of pliers.

Angioedema from angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors: A 48-year-old woman presented with a 1-day history of progressive swelling of the tongue. The patient had been taking enalopril for 2 years prior. The history is suggestive of angioedema secondary to the use of ACE inhibitors.

Facial laceration: A man was brought to the emergency department after having been assaulted. The patient sustained a facial laceration.

Foreign body in the colon: A 28-year-old woman complained of an inability to remove a vibrator from her rectum that had been placed 1 day prior. She denied any other symptoms. A cylindrical mass was palpated at the splenic flexture and is shown on the x-ray.

Stab Wound: A man was transported to the hospital after receiving a penetrating stab wound to the back.
